A short update, long overdue

April 17th, 2012

I haven’t written since the first part of February, this is mostly because the increase in my health has been so slow and incremental, that I don’t really know what to say. I began with a Chiropractor in early Feb, and saw some immediate progress. Then I reverted in the way of pain, so we added acupuncture to the mix. This has single-handedly helped more than any other treatment so far. I can’t say I understand exactly what acupuncture is doing, but I know it has helped immensely (and quickly) to restore my energy and relieve the pain that I was experiencing. I am not pain free yet, but most days I don’t notice it very often. I am very thankful. I have begun to exercise again, finding swimming, as a kind of non-impact cardio workout, to be very helpful along with some pilates. The doc did say I could try and start running again, but essentially to not run hard or fast nor go up or down hills; I suppose my back is just a bit to fragile still for that. We’ll see.
Jamie and the kids are well. Junio has begun soccer this spring, which is great for him. Annabelle and Junio continue to enjoy being in school. Lily is in preschool two mornings a week as well.
This has been a low-key, sort of ‘under the radar’, season for us. We celebrated Annabelle’s 6th birthday at the end of Feb, our 7th anniversary two weeks later, and my 32nd birthday a week and a half ago. We are now at the point where we are contemplating the future, and what God would have us do from here. Please pray with us as we evaluate all the options.

Thanks for reading. Jeremy

Happy Easter everyone!

the right track…? medical update

February 3rd, 2012

Well, its been several weeks of ups and downs. It took awhile to get the official results of the MRI and while they showed a very minor issue with L5-S1 in my back, nothing that the ID doc thought was significant. Certainly, there was no infection (which of course is what that Doc was looking for). He then ordered a bone scan, which I did last Friday, and, as you would expect, it came back normal.
I saw my GP Monday of this week, and he was less convinced that the thing in my back was not the problem. So he referred me to a neurosurgeon to make sure. So Tuesday I saw this surgeon fellow, who didn’t really bother with me much, and after spending a couple moments glancing at the MRIs, told me there was nothing wrong with me and, obviously, nothing he could do. That was especially discouraging, as much because he was so flippant with me as the fact that we were back to square one.
So the only thing left really, was to try a chiropractor. Jamie sees a good one, so after consulting with my GP again I got an appointment with her for Friday (today). We had been concerned to see a chiro without first ensuring that there were no other ‘red flags’ and it would be safe and not mess me up more. As all the tests were normal, even though I was not, we went ahead. I saw her this morning, she said she’d like to do a combo of chiro and acupuncture, which I was fine with. She said from the pain, that it was fairly classical symptoms for S1 problems in my back. As she did the adjustment she noticed that my pelvis and lower back were ‘seriously messed up’, and my spine more generally was pushed to the right side. She was able to adjust quite a few things, and it helped. She didn’t get to the acupuncture today as it would have been to much for my system today. She said at the end of the appointment she had a lot of hope that this adjustment would help me, and I share her optimism. It took away the pain! It also made me incredibly sore in my lower back. She said with as messed up as I’d been for so long, she didn’t expect my bones to stay ok for very long, but with several more sessions and acu., it should do the trick. I’ll see her again on Monday, and I think for the first time in months we’re on the right track.
In the mean time:
- no sitting on a couch or recliner
- no lifting, reaching, stretching, or bending.
- drink at least a gallon of water at day.
- no alcohol or caffeine.
- no dairy products
- when I lay down I must sleep on my left side with a pillow between my knees, or on my back with a pillow under my knees.
- must ice lower back below my ribs and the right side of S region.

thanks for praying everyone, i think we may be getting somewhere. I am dreadfully sore presently, buts its a good sore, i think. :)

To top it all off, we are in the midst of a lovely snow storm which cancelled school for the kids today.
